Weekly Reflection #11 – Digital Devices: Bicycles for the Mind or Distraction Machines

Today in class, we talked alot about the influence and impact of smartphones. Being someone who has grown up in the transition era of having no cellphones, to living in a world that is rapidly becoming based around the use of technology – it is a good reminder to check in with the things that can keep me in touch with reality.

Taking advantage of the different tools on our smartphones that can help keep us mindful of how much we are using our smartphones is something I first need to implement for myself, but something I could see taking into my future classroom. Smartphones are not going anywhere, so reminding our students of how they can be mindful inside and outside the classroom is a great tool for students to have. Things like screen time timers, do not disturb, and other settings that promote focus and lack of distraction are great tools for everyone to use.

Here is a video that was posted that talks about the cellphone ban in BC schools, which shared some insightful reasons why districts may participate in this. What do you think about this new restriction? Do you agree?
